Jamaica is a tropical island in the Caribbean known for its vibrant culture, dramatic landscapes and famously warm people. Lush green mountains rise behind white-sand beaches, and the island's African, European and Indian heritage shows up in everything from the music to the food. Whether you are here for adventure or to do absolutely nothing on a beach, Jamaica delivers.
This is the birthplace of reggae, and the music is everywhere. Visit the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, catch a live sound system on the north coast, or time your trip with a Maroon festival or Junkanoo celebration. Jamaican food is a highlight in itself — jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, curried goat and festival dumplings.
Climb Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, hike the Blue Mountains for sunrise over the island, tour Rose Hall Great House near Montego Bay, swim in the Blue Hole, or take a night boat across Falmouth's Luminous Lagoon. Negril's Seven Mile Beach and the West End cliffs at Rick's Café are the classic sunset stops.
November to mid-December brings pleasant weather and better rates. Most visitors from the USA, Canada and the EU do not need a visa for short stays, but check that your passport has at least six months validity. Pack light, breathable clothing and reef-safe sunscreen. US dollars are widely accepted alongside the Jamaican dollar, and tipping 10–15% is customary.
Route taxis and buses are cheap but crowded and unpredictable, and driving yourself means left-hand roads and mountain switchbacks. Most visitors are happiest with a private driver: a fixed price agreed up front, a licensed air-conditioned vehicle, and someone local behind the wheel who knows which route is actually faster today.
